  • | February 4, 2012

  • For the past three years, I’ve been fortunate to be employed in a well known BPO Company in the Philippines that works with a giant U.S. based client to handle their finances. One of my company’s practice is not to follow Philippine Holidays, instead, we observe the clients holiday which is the United States Federal Holiday. And to make this post more informative and interesting, I run down the list of the US Federal Holidays this 2012. United States Federal Holiday have ten (10) Federal Holidays composed of New Year’s day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day compared to the Philippines that composed of twelve (12) Regular Holidays, five (5) Special Non-Working Holidays and one (1) Special Holiday.

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees. Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).

Monday, January 16  Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

    * January 1, 2012 (the legal public holiday for New Year’s Day), falls on a Sunday. For most Federal employees, Monday, January 2, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See section 3(a) of Executive order 11582, February 11, 1971.)

** This holiday is designated as “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.

*** November 11, 2012 (the legal public holiday for Veterans Day), falls on a Sunday. For most Federal employees, Monday, November 12, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See section 3(a) of Executive order 11582, February 11, 1971.)

One day in the office, while deleting newsletters and other craps in my email. My attention was grabbed by one of the weekly circulating newsletter from the Business Process Association of the Philippines. It says that BPO Companies are complaining because of too many holidays in the Philippines and that their business is suffering because they’re paying more for the salary.

From the bottom of the hearts of every Filipino BPO Employees:

    You greedy bastards! Fuck you!
